Getting Started

Join a club

To get out on the track and go sprinting you need a Motorsport Australia Speed Licence and to get one of those you need to be a member of a Motorsport Australia affiliated Car Club with sporting affiliation. We also recommend one that is affiliated with the MSCA,  (click here) to see a list.

Get a Competition Licence

Once you are a member of a club you apply for a licence from Motorsport Australia online by clicking this link.

Choose an event

See a list of this years events. Once you have chosen an event you need to go to your MA member portal and get set up in Event Entry

Before your chosen event

Read the Supplementary Regulations!, I am serious, know what you are doing and when you are doing. Know that you have a First Timers briefing and a Driver's Briefing.

Have good look at your car, if you don't know about cars take it to someone who does. If the brake fluid hasn't been changed in the last two years, have that done. Normal brake fluid is a good starting point, you don't need the real expensive stuff first time out. Pump your tyres up to the recommended pressure. Make sure the car is empty before you go out on the track, a full can of Coke rolling under the brake pedal can be fatal. Take your toolbox out of the boot and put in your garage or your spot on the grass.

At your first event

Get there with time to spare, try and find a spot with people you know. Keep an eye on the time, you will have a First Timers briefing first up. You need to attend that briefing with your car at the back of form-up with your helmet in the car, your loose junk out of the car, your long-sleeves on and your brain switched on. Listen at the briefing, if you have a question ask it, there are no stupid questions. The person giving the briefing is stressed out as well and may forget to tell you where pit entry is.

Try to relax, a race track is just a road without white lines. Watch your mirrors, know who is around you. Drive within your limits, brake early and creep up on going fast. If your tyres are howling around corners you are going too fast, slow down a bit, try a smoother line and smoother steering inputs and creep up in 5kph increments. Do not try and impress anyone, you have all day to get faster. Keep a "feel" on your brakes, if they go hard and are not working, slow down straight away and come in, if they go soft and spongy, slow down and come in.

Enjoy the day!
